Sourced Scrimmage Notes – Charlie S – Posted on: August 20, 2022

A few sourced notes from today’s scrimmage…

***Sounds like the ones didn’t play a heck of a lot outside of situational stuff. Redzone and goal-line work was where the first group saw most of their action on the day.

***Sounds like the defense held the offense in check most of the day outside of the situational stuff.

***The offense without Gabriel for the most part in the middle of the field struggled to gain any consistency and the defense was quick to pounce.

***Sounds like the defense played really well and allowed few, if any,  sustained drives to the OU second unit offense.

***Was told the defense looked like they found a different gear. Hope to get more specifics there.

***Offense with the ones converted 50-60 percent of their opportunities in goalline situations.

***One drive did see Beville hit Major out of the backfield for a big gain but the defense stood up and forced some negative plays and the drive stalled

***Several sources talked about Marcus Major having a good day in all facets of the game.

***While there was not significant mention from my source about the TEs in respect to catching the ball, source did say freshman Jason Llewelyn ‘looked like a grown man out there blocking’.

***Key Lawrence was a guy that was singled out who played well both in coverage and run support. Was told both he and Billy Bowman recorded interceptions during the practice.

***Danny Stutsman was able to go this scrimmage and it sounds like he was really active and had the hit of the night on one of the backs who he met in the hole.

***Source said Theo Wease was huge in the goal line situations, had one of his best days of camp

***Was told Farooq was good with his body in the red zone “That kid knows how to use his frame and he’s really strong’. He also started off the scrimmage with a long touchdown early on,

***OL was the projected starters (Harrison, Mettauer, Raym, Murray, Wanya) to start and they worked most of the situational stuff with Gabriel

***Once again was told Guyton was the first tackle to sub in. Source said Savion Byrd played both tackle and guard. Was told Jake Taylor worked inside and Sexton worked at tackle for the most part.

*** Source said they believe Davis Beville secured QB2 and Marcus Major made a strong showing to grab RB2.

***Wanted to add a note not specific to this scrimmage, but earlier this week (Thursday) had a source point to LB Jaren Kanak as a guy who had a great week of camp. Was told ‘It all came together for him this week. He looked comfortable and looked like he was playing free and instinctually.

Will keep digging around for additional notes over the weekend.

Team Note | Sourced | L’Damian Washington – Charlie S – Posted on: August 22, 2022

Super K wanted me to pass along a note he picked up last night in regard to Sooners interim wide receiver coach L’Damian Washington.

K was asking how the players are responding to Washington since he took over for Cale Gundy and source told him ‘They love him’.

He was told that the players view Washington as an extension of Cale right now in regard to what he is teaching them in respect to the scheme, but his personality is starting to come through.

Bottom line is that the wide receiver room sounds as if they haven’t missed a beat and are content with the way things are right now.

Update | ’23 W Anthony Evans – Charlie S – Posted on: August 23, 2022

As you know, ’23 wide receiver Anthony Evans is set to commit to the school of his choosing on Friday.

Yesterday I brought you The Latest information we had on the situation HERE.

As I mentioned in the post, we are aware of a lot of chatter about him possibly leaning to UGA after OU had been out front for a long time.

‘I checked with a couple of sources close to his recruitment and the first one told me he still felt confident that OU will be the call.

The second source, who was a long-time believer in Evans to OU, was far less certain of it than they were previously. Source said ‘The Cale Gundy thing opened the door a bit more for Georgia (they had been pursuing even before Cale resigned) and they came hard. I still think OU can win it, but I can’t say that for certain’.

I will say this; As we reported HERE prior to Gundy resigning, we debated about whether we should head out east to see a different wide receiver target (Cayden Lee) and the message that was conveyed to us was that OU was ‘full’ at wide receiver…which basically means that they felt as though Evans indicated he was in the boat.’

After touching base with the second source again this morning, they seem more confident that OU is doing a good job of maintaining their lead and holding off the Georgia momentum. Source said after doing some more digging, they felt like OU still has the lead.

OU has not been playing from behind here, instead, in wake of the Cale Gundy situation, they have been playing defense and Venables, Lebby, and LD Washington are leading the defense.

Of course anything can happen, and we have plans to gather some more information in the next 24 hours or so, but as I said in the comments of the previous thread on Evans, we have multiple sources who indicate OU maintains their lead and we have yet to have a source indicate that Georgia has made a strong enough surge to overtake them.

So right now, we can only go on what we have but we will continue to check on things as Friday approaches.

Quick Takes from Media Viewing Opportunity – Charlie S – Posted on: August 23, 2022

James was out at practice today for the media viewing portion and passed along a few quick observations…

***Harrington working at both Nickel and Safety…looks like he is settling into the ‘multiple role’ at this time and will likely see a bunch of snaps.

***As we have been talking about since April, Jaden Davis still running with the ones.

***DJ Graham getting work behind Woodi Washington on his side.

***Kendal Dennis was working behind Jaden Davis today.

***Jalen Redmond and Kani Walker working on their own, James did not see them participate in contact drill, but they were fully suited

***James got to see the ‘W’ drill and one of his takeaways was “Jayden Gibson blocks his ass off…very physical”

***Punt return first group was Eric Gray and LV Bunkley Shelton

***OL appeared to be working in the order we have been speaking about (LT Harrison, LG Mettauer, C Raym, RG Murray, RT Wanya) and it appeared as though Guyton and Savion were working at tackle in the second group and it looked like Kyle Ergenbright and Brey Walker were working at guard with the second unit. EDIT: Upon further review and conversation, the 2nd unit OL featured LT – Guyton – LG Brey Walker – RG Jake Taylor – RT Jacob Sexton

James has sent me a bunch of raw video which I will prep for you all this evening and have out tomorrow morning for you!
